3 SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 1972
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY - 247TH DAY - 119 DAYS TO COME

Worked out a new arrangement for WAR AND PEACE board with more spaces for drawing cards. Also eliminated specific countries in making and breaking of alliances. Covered old board with overlays, rubber cemented into place. Made new (but rough) set of W. & P. cards. Played with Phil Laurence and Eliott. Keeping armaments in each controlled country was rather laborious and didn't really add anything to the game. Later decided to eliminate control all together. Unowned countries only count when gaining or losing armaments or diplomats. Also when two play each has two countries. Probably also with three players.

Called Phil Orbanes. He'll contact Herb Hochstetter and set up a date to discuss games for Post Cereals. I sug- gested Wendesday at 5.

[drawing of 4 jigsaw puzzle pieces arranged in a square]
on each edge, except at the outside of the overall
layout. There is a pattern - bodies and long arms
leading to hands, etc. - that can only be put to-
gether in one way. They both said that this was
based on the MacMahon squares.

The squares and also the MacMahon cubes, the 30 cubes that Martin wrote up for Frank Armbruster as THE TOWER GAME last year, are in the book MATHEMATICAL PASTIMES by P.A. MacMahon. It contains the most complete study of putting together different shapes so that colors match at the edges. It is out of print but Martin says it is available. He is trying to get Dover to put it out.

MacMahon had only one thing put out commercially - a (cont. on 9/2)
