SUNDAY 3 OCTOBER St. Theresa Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity 1971 276th day - 89 days to come

(cont. from 11/3) [11/3] emperor who wants to construct a great wall around one of the bands.

Another puzzle idea is the 6 PIECE RING PUZZLE. A figure [diagram of circle with a plus sign across it, and some red markings] of three interlocking rings is cut into six pcs. as shown by the red lines and is fastened where the rings come together. The cuts are arranged so that the pcs. can be assembled in only one way. Phil is having a hard job preparing a model.

I asked Phil about the BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH club mailing. He gave me a copy and also a small sheet which he says is going out with a number of company's mailings. (Filed in a "Phil Orbanes" folder.)

Phil had the model of another GAME Bob Hallowell is going to put out. A cross section is shown. [diagram of T-shaped device with circles and two handles] Each player takes a handle and by manipulating the gadget the two balls are made to rotate on the shelf. Object is to try to knock the other marble into the hole.

Phil asked me to think about PUZZLEs, GAMEs or gadgets using springs. They are cheap and attract attention. Later I thought of the GAME I had fooled around with some time ago using a gadget which when pushed [diagram of dome-shaped object with handle on top] down shows a wood strip and then springs up. Object to push it down to different scoring lines and then let it go. Start with easiest and then move to next, etc. Can stop when want but if it falls over you lose all score that turn. (I'll show it to Phil and maybe we'll work together on it.)

To Brentano's. Met Charles Wivel who was there demon- strating his Jigsaw Puzzle of the New York Subway map. (He says it is doing quite well.) I reminded him about his promise to send me TAKE and VERBUM EST. He said he'll send them by U.P.S. Although he worked on the development of NEW TOWN, he is no longer handling it.

Gave S&T #27 and #28 to Henry Levy. He thought that there would be more about games in general. I told him about the possibility of a sister magazine and he was interested in that. The newspaper ad he spoke about last week probably won't be run.

Walter York-Koenigstein there demonstrating 97 particularly altho HAVOC & RICOCHET were also there. I reminded (cont. on 10/2)
