THURSDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 1971
252nd day - 113 days to come
Postal letter to Michael Dummett telling him hotel we'll be in in
London. Told him about writing on July 28th and not getting an answer
Told him I rcd. TAOTL and THE GAME OF MODERN OMBRE.
To Pierce Promotions. Jack Davis gave me EVADE. Didn't have a copy
of SPEED CIRCUIT there, but will have one for me when I get
back. He will also have a listing of the various magazines that
may have pieces on EXECUTIVE DECISION and SLEUTH this
X'Mas.
To Random House. Spoke to Fabio. Doesn't have any further info
on the reprint of AGOG. Now he would like a book on math
games for children. Told him I'd like that and I'll contact him
when I get back. He'll take me to lunch.
I told Fay that I hadn't rcd. the copies of AGOG. She called
Miriam, who is in charge of the remainders. Miriam came
down to speak to me (Fay left for lunch). She told me that
someone had either mislaid or stolen the 25 copies put aside
for me. She had 1 left and she gave it to me.
She said that I should't feel bad about my book being
remaindered. It happens to the best of authors.
I asked her about Castle Books and their parent - Book Sales.
The companies are run by two very honest men. Originally
Book Sales was (and still is) in the remaindering business.
But they then decided that, since some of the books did so
well, why not reprint them.
Miriam thought that they would sell the reprint for about
$1.95. Random House will buy 25 copies from Book Sales to
give me for the 25 I never got. This is in addition to any I
get from my contract with Book Sales.
To Brentano's. Phil Orbanes' ORBIT was attracting a lot
of attention.
