Thinking of making SPELLBINDER a faster moving game. Came up with the following FRANTIC SPELLBINDER. The rules for forming a word and scoring remain the same, but the display and pools are eliminated. Players turn letters from their deck and place them face up so that all players can see them. Players can put out as many or as few as they wish. When a player sees a proper word he calls "Stop." If he can form the word he scores it and the game continues. If he can't for the word he is penalized a certain amount (to be determined) and cannot make a word until another player makes one. When 3 play, any player may turn cards from the neutral deck, except that he must not cause more neutral cards to be faced than he has of his own color. When 2 play, the player must face his cards so that one color does not exceed the other by more than 1. After forming a word, or the opponent doing one, so that one color is ahead by more then 1 the player must turn the other color until caught up. Wrote to Paul Axel thanking him for sending me his games MINIATURE BAROQUE et al. (His memo placed with the other game rules.) Finished a letter to S.K. Howard started 4/30. Told him about SOCIETY TODAY in respect to THE SOCIETY GAME. Wrote to the two who wrote to S&T at the end of last year: Cpt. Steven M. Beckett - thanks for plugging my column and ACQUIRE. L/Cpl. William C. Williams - thanks for his ideas for a "games magazine."
(Cont. from 7/31) [7/29]
When a player has no money at the beginning of his turn he can move without wagering, but still chooses a parity to determine whether he can move again. If he lands on a town and cannot pay he is out of the game as if he "died." A player who is out collects when his town is landed on. When an unused town is landed on the bank collects the money. More than 4 can play be adding additional town and field squares for each additional player. (I suggested strips containing the four squares which are formed into the required shape on the board.) They play for money usually - 1(cent) per $1000 difference between high players and each of the others. When not played for money play until one player has won twice. Wald suggested his giving me CHESS lessons in return for BRIDGE. He has been seeing Henry Pelham-Burn and his wife. They are ardent ACQUIRE fans. I told him to give my apologies for not calling them.
