SUNDAY 16 MAY Rogation Sunday 1971 136th day - 229 days to come
Thinking that Al Richter's game WHIRLPOOL could be made into a skill game by devising some method of changing the spokes by choice, rather than by chance.
Frank Armbruster called. He is [in] town for the Stationery Show. Told him that we insist on his coming for supper. He has just about come to an agreement with Martin Gardner to have him do the instruc- tion booklet for THE TOWER GAME (see 1970). He will call him to- morrow morning to set a date to get together. I suggested an evening, other than tomorrow, so that Frank could come here for supper and then we'd drive over. I told Frank I had a party tomorrow with Gametime, because of my puzzle. I started to describe and he asked if it was NINE OF SWORDS. That, of all the puzzles, had caught his eye. I asked if he saw ENIGMA. He had and it uses the same system for assembling the solid as he had used for INSTANT INSANITY. I asked if he could sue for infringement and he said that he had wanted to get patent protection but didn't have the money to follow thru. I asked, and he received the ACQUIRE I sent him. It is now the third favorite game with his kids, after MONOPOLY and RISK. He also likes it. He described a new puzzle, based on THE TOWER OF HANOI, which he calls THE BUSING PUZZLE. I also told him that I didn't get the rules for THE PARKING LOT PARABLE. His puzzles do well once he gets them on the shelves but it is difficult getting them on without advertising.
Prepared a sheet with my solutions to 34 SKIDOO to give to Phil Orbanes tomorrow.

Joyce has a GAME idea. She asked me to look at a game SHRINK and then call her tonight to talk about it. G. & R: Looked at SHRINK. A deck of cards with word association tests used for character discovery. (Don't remember the details.) This is put out by Art Fair. The man from there gave me sheets on their other items - ETHICS, ESP TEST KIT, SIGNATURE, FOURCAST, ASTRO-TAROT, SIXTH SENSE. MARIENBAD is a fancy version of NIM on a 4 x 4 field. (Have sheet with rules.) Put out by "Focus International Inc." of Denmark. Met Frank Armbruster at G. & R. Frank gave me a set of THE BUSING PUZZLE and the rules for THE PARKING LOT PARABLE. He took me to lunch. He is looking for financing for his com- pany. Even if he doesn't get it he'll be able to stay in business but if he does he can move a lot faster. He will come to my house for lunch tomorrow and then we'll go to Martin Gardner's. Martin told him that he hadn't seen me for a long time and was looking for- (cont. on 5/14)
