SATURDAY 20 MARCH 1971 79th day - 286 days to come

Rudy Lopez called. Told him about LIVE WIRE - QUICK SHOCK, actually LIVE WIRE - SUDDEN SHOCK would be a better name. Didn't make a specific date to get together, but will in a few weeks.

Rcd. THE GENERAL (Mar. - Apr. 1971). Finally rcd. RACE THRU SPACE GAMES (didn't unpack it since Felicia already gave me one).

Rcd. another letter from Mary Hilt, this time on company station- ery. Partly in answer to my last letter, and also giving me info on contract [crossout] similar to yesterday.

Sent a letter to William A. Gale. (See 3/10). Gave him, among other things, my new ideas on SLAM.
Wrote to Professor Tanber, who was interested in board games and saw me written up in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN. Gave him Haar Hoolim's address. Wrote to Haar telling him about it.

BB and I to Al & Adela Richter. Brought him a copy of TEMPO. He showed me his games - really beautiful models that look professional. TRY-ANGLES: - Board is as shown, with the lines actually being grooves. There is a supply of pcs. (cut up knitting needles) the same length as one segment. Also chips in red and white. The first part of the game is like BOXES with each player in turn placing a seg- ment, unless a triangle is completed, in which case another segment is placed. When a player completes a triangle he places a chip of his color in it. When all triangles are filled, the 2nd stage begins. Players in turn move one of their chips, either across an edge to an adjacent empty space, or if it is next to one or more of their own color it can be moved to any empty space adjacent to the group. (He asked if such a move had been used and I told him about CHE and also about my similar move in LOTTO WAR and INVASION.) object is to get chips into a hex or intto a large triangle (both shown). The chips on these configurations can be removed. Removing takes a turn and can be postponed as desired. When one player has three or less chips remaining, the game is over. Each player deducts the num- ber of chips remaining on the board from those he took off in order to get his final score.
Another variation, which played a lot better, was to eliminate the first stage and start the second from the position shown. Al was thinking of just using this. I suggested, instead, that he include both and try to come up with some others. A possibility, have two colors of segment pcs. When a player gets two, or three, of his color around a triangle he places his chip in it.
Al gave me a copy of WOTTLE, a pencil and paper word game he had tried to sell by mail order. He didn't get back the cost of the ads. QUADRUME:- A gambling game. Layout is a color wheel with 6 colors. There are 4 dice with the colors on the faces and a fifth die with faces something like 1-1-1-2-3-silver. Players place bets on a
