Sunday 1 February 1970
Sexagesima 32nd day - 333 days to come
At night had an idea for another puzzle, tentative
name FINE TUNING. Mounted behind a board are
(say) 5 dials with stems in front for turning. There are
The dials overlap with holes in some so that others show
thru in some positions. The dials are colored in sections
in (say) 5 different colors. There are (say) 10 windows in
the board where colors show thru.
My first idea was to have all windows showing the
same color as the solution. This would be too easy. A num-
ber of solutions could be worked out, such as 2 of each
color, a pyramid (1-2-3-4), 5 each of 2 colors. These could
be graded by difficulty.
The New York Times had an ad for EXCALIBUR. This
wasn't a puzzle, but instead a paper weight with a letter
opener in it. (Filed in 1970 Ad Clips.)
Tried out CROSSINGS in connection with the letter from
Paul Yearout. Black can force an easy win after white
makes the move he pointed out. I'll have to change the
last paragraph to clear up the possible misunderstanding.
Finished the faces of the cards for PE-LING.
Called Claude. He is thinking of making the rounds of companies,
etc. trying to interest them in small games (pencil &
paper, etc.) that could be used as premiums. Asked if he
could count on me to supply some if he makes some con-
tacts. Told him sure, but preferably not before Toy Fair is over.

Called Jim Dunnigan. He is going to Albany for his mother's funeral.
I asked if I could help with getting out S & T. He said he had it
under control. Edi Birsan has quit but Jim has a replacement.
Jim sent a short letter Jared Johnson. Also a staff newsletter.
I will be getting it also.
