TUESDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 1971
9/20
St. Matthew, Evangelist
264th day - 101 days to come
Rcd. 12 answers to the SLEUTH problem. One from D. Kucera
was a fan letter for MONAD, ACQUIRE, BAZAAR, and AGOG.
Met Pierre at our hotel. Drove to the department stores and
we went looking together.
At Samaritaine and Au Louvre saw : -
LE JEUX DU CRACK - a SCRABBLE variation with tiles in different colora
and the spaces on the board also colored in the same colors. Score
extra for placing a tile on a space of the same color. (Didn't get
the details.)
LES GRANDS AMIRAUX - A naval variant of STRATEGO. (Didn't get details.)
LES JEUX DU 420 - A word game with elaborate fancy equipment, mainly
chips for payment from opponent when a word is made. There
is a quadrille board on which words are formed. Words do
not have to cross. I believe that alternate words must be
made horizontally, vertically, etc. When a word is formed
that crosses one or more words already on the board (using a letter
in them) the remainder(s) of the existing word(s) is (are) removed.
The player forming a word gains collects 5 francs per letter for a
word of 5 or less letters. He collects 10 francs per letter for a
word of 6 or more letters. (Didn't get the rest of the details.)
LE PLUS MALIN - Each player places three pawns behind a
barrier. He can choose from a number of different colors. After
they are setup, players try to guess the opponent's (2 play)
setup. In turn they place three pawns in a row and are informed
(by means of [illegible crossed out] pawns of the two other colors
placed to the side) whether any of the colors are the same, and
also whether are in correct position. (Pierre said it wasn't
nearly as good as JOTTO.)
Bought 2 boxes of chips in different colors and shapes at Au Louvre.
Pierre drove me to Galeries Lafayette where I saw : -
TILT - Pcs. move in channels and Pierre said it was a manipulative
game. Also he has a copy, so I didn't look at it.
BLOCUS - Played on a 16 x 16 quadrille by 2 or 3 players.
When 2 play, each has 4 pcs. When 3 play, each has 3 pcs.
These are placed on the board (1 at a time I believe)
as the players wish. Pcs. move like Chess Queens. As they
leave a space a cardboard square of their color is left on
the space. Pcs. cannot jump pass over another pc. (any color,
I believe) or a cardboard square (again of any color, I believe).
object is to Pcs. can pass between two diagonally touching obstructions.
Object is form fences around areas. These must be continuous
and touching two sides. At end player scores 1 point for
each space in his territory. (Don't remember some of the
details of ending the game and scoring.)
At Samaritaine bought LES CORSAIRES. There was a folder with
the games put out by Capiepa. They included 3 CHEVAUX 1 TIERCE,
SHERLOCK HOLMES, LE KON TIKI, PEAUX ROUGES CONTRE LONGS CONTEAUX (BATTLE OF LITTLE BIG HORN, THE, TIR TAC (BOOBY TRAP),
(cont. on 9/20)
