TUESDAY 24 AUGUST 1971
St. Bartholomew, Apostle
236th day - 129 days to come
Blocked out a letter to Jim Kraus, about BAZAAR, WILD WOOD PILE,
SLEUTH, and PLANES.
At "The Push Cart" bought 4 more copies of PSYCHE - PATHS
for 49 [cents] each. Also bought 2 small domino sets at 10 [cents] each.
Also saw TAM-BIT, TAKE FIVE, and SNAFU on sale for 95 [cents] each.
At "Bargain City" bought 120 push pins and saw TAM-BIT for
sale at 99 [cents].
Bought the April 1971 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN. At the end of
Martin's columnhe mentioned that he had rcd. rules for
many two-hand games based on Conway's LIFE. Also that there there will be a newsletter on LIFE put out by
{Robert T. Wainwright
{1280 Edcris Road
{Yorktown Heights, N.Y. 10598
On Worth St. at a small store bought 25 colored pencils for
$1, and 21 small dice also for $1.
To Earl Perel's apartment. He showed me a book he took had
out from the public library : - THE FOLKWAYS OMNIBUS OF CHILDREN'S GAMES
by Iris Vinton - (Stackpole Books - 1970). It is mainly active,
singing, etc. games, but there are quite a few variations
(simplifications) of standard board games.
Played his game SPQR, which he had mentioned (not by
name) when he was at my house. The board is similar (I
may have the colors arranged different than he has) to
the diagram.
[Large diagram of a 10 x 10 square grid board.

The top two rows and bottom two rows are marked with a slightly darker line than any of the other rows. Some of the central spaces in those rows are marked off and/or hatched in red. Beneath the grid there are four pieces - 2 marked across the diagonal, two marked with a plus (+) sign.]
The red areas represent movable cover
pcs. which start in the positions shown.
These are considered colorless. The
two hatched spaces are the goals, as in
CAMALOT. Each player has 14 pcs.
He used squares mounted on a round chip.
The squares are made up of two triangles
of cardboard (see illustration).
The pcs. are differentiated
between players by the black and red lines.
Each player's set of 24 pcs.
is made up of 2 groups of
six pcs., each one having
all possible combinations
of two colors. The other two
pcs. are "wild" and can land
on any space. They are
neutral in color.
