TUESDAY 27 JULY 1971
208th day - 157 days to come
Felicia called. She rcd. the carbon of the letter from Jim Kraus
She thought it was encouraging, despite the reference to "our
profits". I told her I would prepare a more dimensional
model of WILD WOOD PILE.
She has bben getting advice of what to ask for in the AGOG
paperback contract, if it goes thru, she will ask for $1500
advance and a straight 10% royalty, but will settle for less.
I told her of my bringing the letter to Random House yesterday.
She was glad that I had discovered it.
Told her that Claude wanted to bring Raymond Thursday. Of course
the material that Alphonse Rubbens took finally came back.
FREE FORM was rattling around in a box, but she thinks it is O.K.
Carl Eisenberg called. He is not doing SPELLBINDER. I told him
I'd pick it up Thursday.
He'd still like to do TANGLED WEB but doesn't think he can cost it
at under $10. He has a few more ideas to try however.
He is interested in TORTURE TOWER and thinks he can do it
for under $5. His attorney thinks there may be some patent
problems but will know more soon.
I brought up QUINTESSENCE and he said the hell with it.
It isn't doing anything anyhow ar $10.
Martin Gardner called. In our discussion Friday of HALMA he brought up the
problem that a player could block the game endlessly by
keeping a man in his "yard". He suggested counting moves and
after 20 moves the player had to vacate his "yard". I suggested
instead that a player could be forced to jump out of "his" yard.
Martin wants to use this in his column and asked
if it was all right to credit me with it.
In the book "Who Was Who" Martin found a Dr. George Howard Monks.
He was in England for graduate studies in 1884 and
obviously was the one Encyclopedia Brittanica credited with
invention of HALMA.
Martin suggested that I write to the Japanese writer about
the puzzle and wanted to give me his address. I thought
it would be better to look at the book again before
writing and I'll get the address then.
Told Martin I'd mail TOBU SHOGI back to him today.
Did.
Arthur called. He would like us to go to Wald's after the session
at Felicia's Thursday. I said O.K. if O.K. with Claude, but
for an early evening. Arthur said they have a surprise to show us.
Called Earl Jay Perel to ask him a question about his game
THE AMERICAN WAY. I'll call him next week about getting together
again.
