SATURDAY 24 JULY 1971
Pioneer's Day (Utah)
205th day - 160 days to come
Rcd. PANZERFAUST (#46, July '71). Has a complete game WAR COLLEGE,
which is played on the TACTICS II board.
Rcd. a letter sent to S & T asking where RECKON can be bought.
Enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Thought of two GAME ideas, using cubes on a board:
1) The cubes are dice. They can move as many spaces as the player wishes
as a rook. The number of spaces moved is added
to the number on top of the die at the start, casting out sixes,
and the die lands with the resultant number on top. (Possible variant: a six
is wild allowing a capture at any distance.) (Details to be
worked out.)
2) Cubes have colors on the faces. They move to pile and players
score for certain patterns in the towers. (Just a germ.)
Thought of a PUZZLE. On a 10 x 10 peg board, 32 pegs are
placed so that they form the corners of 8 rectangles. 8
rubber bands, preferably of a number of different colors
are provided to place to form the rectangles. (Numerous
puzzles can be formed by different placement of the pegs.
Squares that are tilted, as in Martin Gardner's HIP,
can also be used.
(cont. from 7/25) [7/26]
Each addition over one in the same box - 20 point bonus.
Each subtraction over one in the same box - 20 point bonus.
"Shotzee" - An operation that gives the same answer as another
one counts 50 points "instead" of its normal score. (In the
example two multiplications resulting in 21 were shown and
one was scored as a "shotzee." Since I didn't see the rules I am
not sure exactly what constitutes a "shotzee".)
To Random House. Asked Fay about the copies of AGOG.
She'll check with the gal in charge at the end of the week.
Gave Fabio the letter refusing the Castle Book reprint for the
present. Fabio told Fay to bring it to the contract dept. She
suggested bringing a xerox instead. I promised to call Fabio
as soon as I heard from Gold Medal.
Fabio brought up the matter of a book on puzzles for children.
I asked the age level he had in mind and he said 10 to 14. We'll
get together after I get back from Europe and discuss it.
Earl Jay Perel here for supper. He brought his copy of
THE STUDY OF GAMES, and loaned it to me till the next time
we get together. I will have to get this one, if only for the
bibliographies.
Earl showed me his idea for making my NETWORK into a pro-
