SATURDAY 10 JULY 1971
191st day - 174 days to come
Felicia called saying she had lost her notes on yesterday's
conversation. Told her about the Castle offer for AGOG. She'll
set up a meeting with Harvey Gardner early next week and I'll
bring him a copy of AGOG and we'll discuss the matter. She
also thinks it possible for both deals to go thru.
Arthur called to tell me he couldn't contact Felicia yesterday. Told
him I'd be seeing her early next week. He'll check with Wald
(who is away for the weekend) Monday and call me about the
question on POWUR and I'll pass the information to Felicia.
He had a new idea for his GAME with "the green deck" to
stop the type of play I used. When a player calls "green"
he must reach it within a number of cards equal to the number
of cards he has already called (For example if he has called
6 cards, regardless of how many are "correct" and how many
are "wrong," he must reach the green card in 6 cards.) If he
does not reach the green in the req'd number he does not count
the cards after the green as "correct", but only those before
the green are counted "wrong."
Claude called. I told him of Hallmark's [apparent] interest in word
games and suggested that he work on his word GAME.
Showed RECONSTRUCTION and THE WORM TURNS to Phil & Annette.
Phil was fairly interested in the former, with Elliot even
more so. I found a third solution for the latter.
(cont. from 7/9) [7/9]
player in turn plays any of his pcs. he wishes, and at
either end of the figure. Played it with BB and the arbitrary division of the pcs.
wasn't very satisfactory. Tried each choosing a pc. in
turn but this tended to become routine. The best idea
would be to have a number, from 1 to 12, on each pc. and
to have 12 small cards numbered 1 to 12.
(cont. from 7/12) [7/23]
PERPLEXING PUZZLES AND TANTALIZING TEASERS(Children's
puzzles) He will give me the 5th book of the series, with
FOCUS, when it comes out.
Looked at the copy of WORD WAYS with CORRESPONDENCE CRASH. Seems
to be the same as published in NOST-ALGIA, except that it made
clear that only the number of "crashes" is given, not the location.
Martin corresponds with a Japanese writer who translates
his books. This fellow sent him a book of puzzles, from
which he got the idea of doing a column on HALMA.
(cont. on 6/6)
