FRIDAY 9 JULY
1971 190th day - 175 days to come
Called Fay Hertog @ Random House. She said that Random House is trying
to get some of those who rcd. copies of AGOG to send 125
copies to me. (I couldn't understand who, or why they have to,
but Fay says they have to by contract.) It will take awhile but
eventually I'll get them.
She asked if I had rcd. the letter they sent, which I hadn't.
It had to do with a book publisher who wants to do a reprint
in hard cover of AGOG and she put Fabio on to give me the
details.
The publisher is Castle Book. They offer 5% royalties -
of which Random House will get half. There is an advance of
$1000, again split.
I told Fabio that my agent had a paper back company interested
in AGOG. He thinks I can do both. He gave me the name of
the one to contact about details. { Mr. Thoman Lowry, Contract Dept., Random House
He also suggested that I check my contract. Did and I have
20 days in which to refuse to accept a reprint offer. If
I don't get back to them in that time, they can proceed.
Called Felicia at office. Not in & supposed to call back.
Didn't. Called her at home and she was quite oiled. Told her
about the Castle offer. Can't talk to her and told her
I'd speak about it on Tuesday.
Rcd. the letter from Fabio with a release card to sign.
Rcd. a letter from Kathy Brooks. She enclosed a copy of one
page from a letter from a SLEUTH player. The woman suggested
a variation for two players. Kathy wanted my opinion on in-
cluding it in the next revision of the rules.
Rcd. a letter from { Eric Nielsen, [address], Long Beach, Cal. 90808
an AGOG reader who has a lot of game he would like to show
me: - CARD-BOARD, PATHWAYS, HORSE, TRANSFERA, PENTOMINO PAIR,
TOUCH AND GO (TAG), ISOLATION, ZAG, THE DOMINO DOT GAME,
EUCLID.
Rcd. a letter from Warren Buell. Sent clippings, including a story
mentioning ACQUIRE and an ad featuring MONAD.
Made up a puzzle, tentatively called THE WORM TURNS. It
[diagram of two trapezoids, left labeled "A" and right labeled "B", with arrows drawn to show sizes]
consists of 12 pieces of two kinds with lengths as
follows:- A=2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 : B=3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
The object is to place them with a 90° turn at each
joint so that they join in a continuous chain.
Then worked out a game with the same equipment. Divide the
12 pcs. into 2 random groups of 6. One player, who goes
first, tries to keep the figure "open." The other player tries
to "close" the figure by causing it to lap over itself. Each
