TUESDAY 22 JUNE
First Day of Summer 1971 173rd day - 192 days to come
Called Random House to ask about my copies of AGOG neither
Fay nor Fabio there.
Picked up the registered letters for X-CHANGE-WORD and
OPEN BRIDGE at the post office.
Rcd. a long distance call from Arthur Katz, inventor of
SECURITY and INSURANCE. He was concerned as to
whether I rcd. his model. Apologized for not writing
to tell him. Told him that the play was too much
like MONOPOLY and the topic was not that timely, as
WHO CAN BEAT NIXON? is. Told him that I'd look at it
further and probably contact him this weekend when I
go to Philadelphia, so that he can pick it up.
Read the rules over and it is not completely bad, but
not enough chance for skill.
Wrote to Robert Ogilvie who asked to join NYGA, particularly
to ask whether manufacturers object to multiple submissions. Told
him that they do. Also told him about IDEAS.
Wrote to Barney L. Taylor. Told him that I couldn't think of a
manufacturer who might like HINDU CHECKERS. Suggested that
he get the PLAYTHINGS or the TOYS directories. Returned his
check for $5.
Was going to write to Earl Jay Perel, and then realized that he
lived in Manhattan and called him. Thanked him for this sug-
gestion for changes in NETWORK to make it a proprietory game. He
said he had tried some of the ideas and they work. We
discussed books on games. Two that I haven't seen
he thinks are good:- MAN, PLAY AND GAMES by Caillois and
A STUDY OF GAMES. He is, of course, interested in the philosophical
aspect of games.
He also does games for commercial use. 3M is now looking at
a card game of his - TRAFFIC SHADES. The deck has cards of
3 colors (red, amber, and green) in 5 (I believe) shades of
each. Play and melding is similar to PINOCHLE.
I asked him if he'd like to get together with NYGA. He would.
I'll have him come up here first, in about the middle of
July. Gave him my number, in case he wants to talk to me.
Another GAME of Earl's is being considered by Parker. It
is played on an 11 x 11 quadrille. Players take turns placing
markers on the intersections. Score for each square, parallel
to the edges, completed - regardless of size. (Didn't get the de-
tails.)
