TUESDAY 6 APRIL
Tuesday in Holy Week 1971 96th day - 269 days to come
Called Felicia. The letter from Whitman was informal and
she will not be able to do anything about FOCUS until
she gets a promised formal release. The letter called for
carbon copies to Tom Mason and Bruce Freise, but not to
Tom Burger. The letter said that they thought that FOCUS
was a fine game and that they would eventually want to
upgrade it. But, since it did not fit into their foreseeable
marketing plans, they didn't think it was fair to hold on
to it.
Rcd. a catalog sheet for THE NINE OF SWORDS from Phil Orbanes.
Rcd. a letter from Jim Kraus. He needs the rules for PROFIT.
He'll try to remember to send me EVADE.
Sent him the repros of PROFIT that I got for a registered
letter and never sent. Reminded him that I wanted
EVADE, SLEUTH, and EXECUTIVE DECISION.
Rcd. INTERNATIONAL WARGAMER (Vol. 4 #1&2 - Jan. & Feb. 1971) and
INTERNATIONAL WARGAMER SUPPLEMENT (March 1971).
The Feb. issue has a review of a book THE BOMB AND THE COMPUTER
(Wargaming from Ancient Chinese Mapboard to Atomic Computer, by
"Andrew Wilson," Delacorte Press, New York, 1968).
It also mentions that there is a facsimile copy of LITTLE WARS
by H.G. Wells (available from Macmillan Co. for $5.95).
Called Pete Swift at his office. Out sick. Called him at his
home in the evening. Discussed his rules and said that I
didn't care for "Running", unless you get 2, rather than 1.
He'll send me two sets of the rules (he has made some
changes) and I will mark my comments and get 1 back to
him.
(cont. from 4/7) [4/16]
player's score and then multiplies the remainder by the num-
ber of times he scored in that column. Play 4 columns, but
if a player is behind so that even if he scores the max-
imum from then on he can't win, the game is stopped and
scored at that point.
I suggested that three could play by pairing two at a time
and they determined that 6 columns would do it.
(At first it was overwhelming, but then as I began to see
what was involved, it was rather fun.)
They say it can also be played with the leads open, but this
becomes very difficult. They also sometimes use my sugges-
tion of keeping a record of the hands and replay them, ex-
changed between players.
One other rule. A set hand, such as all of one house, is not played, or scored
