FRIDAY 4 DECEMBER 1970
338th day - 27 days to come
Dale told me that Michael Dummett called late last night and
would be here today at 10. He made it at 12:30.
He returned the three games he borrowed from me last time:
AUSGEWAHLTE KARTENSPIELE, BUCH DER FAMILIENSPIELE, DAS,
BUCH DER SPIELE.
Gave Michael the material I reproduced for him on 11/29.
Showed Michael the material I rcd. from Don Laycock on 11/19.
He was quite interested in TYZICHIA. In the second
reprint Laycock gives a variation of LUCKY which a
native said was from Japan. Laycock said it was ob-
viously of European derivation, but Michael looked up a
game called KABU in HANAFUDA THE FLOWER CARD GAME from
which it undoubtedly came. This in turn came from a game
KAP-O, which Michael looked up in "Culin's"
GAMES OF THE ORIENT.
Michael took Laycok's address and will write to him.
He doesn't mind if I tell Laycock about LUCKY, etc.
Went thru "Jessel's" A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WORKS IN ENGLISH ON
PLAYING CARDS AND GAMING. Prepared a list but will check it
tomorrow.
Showed LE LIVRE DES JEUX to Michael. He will buy a copy, and he
took Pierre Berloquin's address to write to him.
Michael told me that when he went to the "Cincinnati Art
Museum" he was very well treated. They had sold him photo-
copies by mail before.
The curator there gave Michael's address to Stuart
Kaplan, who contacted Michael. Kaplan was interested in
publishing Michael's book on old games, if he could
have it ready for the X'Mas season next year. Michael
was not favorably impressed and didn't want any part
of it. Kaplan said he'd write a book himself - as Michael
observed, using a few books and a lot of imagination.
Rcd. NOST-ALGIA, Dec. 1970 (#128). Nothing of particular
interest to me.
Rcd. a $5 check from S&T.
Earlier in the week Felicia had asked me whether I thought
Connor Barrett should send her a model of DICEY
or TRICKY TRAMPOLIN. Looked at the rules again and it
seems interest, tho expensive. Maybe the smaller
version would not be prohibitive. Called Felicia to tell her
this.
She said that someone's lawyer (can't remember who) doesn't
like the "hold harmless" clause in the X contract. Neither do
I. She said she'd try, but she doesn't think they will change it.
Also her lawyer looked at it and found nothing wrong with it.
She thinks, however, it is time to start getting a little
tougher with X.
