MONDAY 1 JUNE
1970 152nd day - 213 days to come
To "Au Louvre" dept. store. Saw DIAMINO which was a word
tile game with various editions, some with SCRABBLE
type boards, others without the board, and also a version
with letter dice. Also saw ACQUIRE and some other
3M games. TWIXT (BB is pretty sure) was marked down to about
half price.
Saw LA CLÉ - a word tile game with a SCRABBLE type board.
Saw RICHESSES DU MONDE & JEU DU CINEMA (both of which
I later bought.)
To "Samaritaine" dept. store. Bought the following games and asked
to have them shipped to the U.S.A. (Come back between
5 & 6 to pay, after shipping costs are determined.) :-
RICHESSES DU MONDE, JEU DU CINÉMA, [crossed out], LONG COURS,
LES PRÉSIDENTS DIRECTEURS GÉNÉRAUX, RADIO-GUIDAGE, DIAMINO (small set)
and a plastic container of chips in different shapes and colors.
Pierre picked me up at the hotel and drove me around to some old
book and game stores. Didn't see much but in one store where
he had a lot of unmounted game boards and rules and he took
a lot of time with me I bought LA GUERRE MODERNE which
he said was c. 1916. It was 45f but I felt obligated.
Pierre dropped me at Samaritaine. They wanted about f. to
ship the games, almost as much as the games themself. I said I'd
take them myself. It was just before closing and they said they'd
send them to the hotel tomorrow.
Earlier at Samaritaine looked at another game 420, which
appeared to be a gambling game played on a betting layout.
Didn't get any of the details. Quite expensive.
Earlier in the day looked in Bazaar du "Hotel de Ville" dept.
store. Nothing new.
At night looked in the window of Le Nain Blue. Saw ACQUIRE
and LE TRIOKER which is played with triangular pieces
with numbers (of dots) in the corners.
(cont. from 6/2) [6/2]
placing the cards as they are turned over next, diagonally being
O.K. to a card already placed. The completed tableau should
have no card which is not next to at least one higher card, ex-
cept the kings, which must all be joined. (In other words,
considered as elevations there should not be more than one
peak.) For an easier game a diagonal connection to a higher
card, or king to king, is O.K. For a harder game only orthogon-
al connections are considered. (It didn't seem particularly in-
teresting.) (There must be a good idea here somewhere.)
Pierre showed me a little of something he called LES SERIES.
