SUNDAY 31 MAY
First Sunday after Trinity 1970 151st day - 214 days to come
Called Pierre Berloquin when we got to the hotel in Paris.
He and his wife, Annie, picked us up at the hotel
and took us for dinner.
I gave him copies of MONAD, WATCH, BIG FUNERAL,
and SOMA.
He told me about two of his games:-
THREE DIMENSIONS :- 27 cards - the 1, 2, 3, of 3 suits and, in
addition to the regular white cards, a similar set with
pink backgrounds, and one with light blue backgrounds. It
is played similar to MATE. 2 play and each is dealt
13 cards, the 27th being exposed and placed out of the
game. A lead must be matched in two of the three
dimensions. The high card (giving a rank to the suits &
colors) in the unmatched dimension wins the trick and
leads to the next. The value of the "mate" card (I think)
is the sum of its three ranks (and can vary from 3 to 9)
and this multiplied by the number of the trick in which mate
is given. (He says it gives him a headache to play.)
CONCORDE:- 49 cards (the other 3 not being used) are dealt out
in a 7 x 7 square. 2 play, each using 8 pawns. After all
are placed one at a time in turn. After all are placed they are
moved by a King's move. Two pawns cannot occupy the same
space. Object is to get 4 pawns on 4 cards of the same rank
or on 5 cards of the same suit in sequence. Score 1 point
for each successful arrangement. 10 points wins. (What stops a
player from moving off a scoring combination and back on in
the next turn?)
In his book he is changing the name DOMINO BEAD GAME
to SIDOMINOS.
(cont. from 6/1) [6/2]
This is a takeoff on the DOMINO BEAD GAME, played with
cards placed as in the diagram. (Don't remem-
ber the details. In fact I'm not sure he had them
worked out.)
[diagram of five arranged rectangles]
Pierre and I played his [crossed out] and his friend's
game LE SERPENT. A 7 x 7 field is layed out using a
deck of cards (with 3 not used). Players in turn place
a marker on any unoccupied card they wish. Continue
until all 8 (I believe) of each player's markers are
placed. After this, players in turn move one or more
markers one space orthogonally. If more than one is
moved all the moved markers must be adjacent to each
other orthogonally, around one or more corners being
O.K. They all move together like a serpent crawling. (It
is simpler to take the last piece in the group being
