SATURDAY 5 JULY
1969 186th day - 179 days to come
Wrote a postcard to Chris Wagner telling him I hadn't received
HYPER-SPACE yet and asking him if I should write to Calhamer.
To Martin Gardner's with BB. Brought him the repros of the book.
He looked thru them quickly and seemed to like it.
He looked thru all of his material and I took the following with
me (most of it to be returned):-
TRI-HEX (which I can keep): A board & rules.
HYPERCHECKERS AND HYPERCHESS - by Wm. D. Groman, Ph.d. [address] Richmond, Va. 23220
A long book of typewritten pages. Martin thinks I can probably get
a copy of writing to Groman.
A GAME from Ted M. Lay. (I am pretty sure I have it already.)
A letter from a Paul Goldenberg of Harvard with RANI'S GAME. An
answer from Martin mentioning a GAME of placing dominos
on a board till no more can be placed. [crossed out] He
also mentioned to me that Golomb had been considering
sueing Parker Brothers over UNIVERSE.
A booklet on METRIC CHESS by John Geiger (which I already had).
Some material on PRIME NIM by Conway (which I already had).
BOISSIÉRE'S PYTHAGOREAN GAME a pamphlet by John F.C. Richards re-
printed from SCRIPTA MATHEMATICA (Vol. XII, No. 3). [RITHMOMACHY]
[crossed out line]
The rules of RITHMOMACHY in an article from Engineering and
Science Review.
Martin had an up-to-date list of reprints from "Scripta Mathematica."
I'll send for "Boissiére's Pythagorean Game" and two other things.
Saw a book:- GAME PLAYING WITH COMPUTERS by Donald D. Spencer (Spartan Books - '68).
Games seem to be very simple.
Looked at the editions of THE JOURNAL OF RECREATIONAL MATHEMATICS thru the
latest - Vol. 2., No. 2 (4 per year).
In Vol. 2, No. 2 (April '69) there was THE GAME OF SIM by Gustavus J.
Simmons (SIMple SIMmons).
[diagram of six dots in hexagon shape, lines drawn between all dots]
2 players. Each in turn uses his color to draw one of the 15 lines
between two vertices. First to complete a triangle of
his color with the points on the vertices of the hex
loses.
In Vol. 1, Number 2 they had a game called
HIT & RUN. This had quite a few different
diagrams including the one Martin will use in
his column. (see 6/16).
With Phil & Annette played THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS. They liked
it. Phil thought the dials should be made so that they
snap into place with a click.
Mailed the WFF'N PROOF rules book to Lech.
