MONDAY 19 MAY
1969 139th day - 226 days to come
Decided to change the name CLOSED CIRCUIT to THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS.
Tom Atwater called at 2:30. Arranged to meet him at Stancraft at
3:30. Got in to Stationery Show with Press Card Chris sent me.
No trouble and also got the directory.
Was there a little early and was speaking to Bill Caruson and
Will Erickson when Tom Atwater came along. They raised their eye-
brows that I know Tom. Jim Rockwell wasn't there yet and I
spoke to [crossed out] Will. They are disappointed that BAZAAR is not mov-
ing off the counters. They have heard that it popular with
children. Bill says his daughter gets up early in the morning to
play. (She is 7 I think.) They are thinking of starting a "Family
Line" and think BAZAAR might better be there. The reason for starting
new lines is to keep one line from getting too big.
To Jim Rockwell at Stancraft (right across the aisle
from 3M). He game me a copy of their new card game of
the old LIARS POKER. Also has rules for HOCUS POKER,
DRAW ONE, WIPE-OUT, WELFARE, SEVEN OR ELEVEN.
He showed us THE ODYSSEY which is sort of a modified
chase game with each of 4 players trying to move four
ships across the sea, 2 each from the two end. 4 sided
die is used and on a throw of 4 can move a ship onto land
where it is safe against being sent back. But another 4 is
required to get the ship back in the sea. Not great as a
game but beautifully done. Jim said he would send me a
copy after it is in production.
Made an appointment to go to Jim's hotel room at 5:30.
At 3M Bill said he would send me FEUDAL and
BLUE LINE, their new Hockey game. Will said he would send me
4 each of the new editions of MONAD and VENTURE. Also
copies of the test version to send to Lech.
Met Anatole Holt at 3M. Later found out that Tom is doing
some management work for Anatole's company in return
for stock. Anatole is the inventor of MEM. He will soon be
coming out with a new one called HAGGLE. Me I mentioned
that I had some games with that name, but forgot that I
was using one in the book. Anatole mentioned that he had
a word GAME in Martin Gardner's April column.
Tom and I met Anatole again at Gary & Reidel's. They
have a number of new things by John Geiger.
To Jim Rockwell at his hotel. Showed him TEMPO, INTERPLAY,
and ODD OR EVEN. Seemed to like them but wanted us to
write some copy to glamorize them. Tom said (later) that
he would write some and send it on to me for my com-
ments.
Jim took just the rules that I brought. (I took the
