TUESDAY 4 FEBRUARY
1969 35th day - 330 days to come
Fabio's secretary called and postponed our lunch till Friday.
The 4th quarter royalty check came from 3M.
In barber shop took clipping from Dec. 1968 POPULAR MECHANICS.
There were 3 games listed:-
THERBRED - racing with playing cards. Sent $1 for a copy. Also a form letter.
EMO - dice ROULETTE with 36 dice. Sent $2 for a copy. Also a form letter.
HORSESHOE - Sent form letter asking for info. (Clipping filed in 1968 Ad Clips.)
Phil Orbanes called me from Cleveland and we spoke for over
an hour.
He again asked for my support vis-a-vis Irv Lubow. I
told him that I had started with him and that I would stay with
him. He said that King Ceyce (that is his first name)
would probably be contacting me in [crossed out] 10 days to 2 weeks.
There is a possibility that Allstate will buy out A-H and
then Gamescience will be completely separate from Renwal and
will be based in Baltimore. Neither of us are too happy
about that.
Once he comes from Cleveland he will be much more tied
down with administration and wants to depend on me for the
creative end. He is looking forward to the quality $2.98
line at the end of the summer. He wants TAM-BIT in it and
suggests changing name to COUNTERPOINT. I also told him
about NEWTOWN which he thought sounded interesting.
He would like me in, in some kind of semi-permanent
basis. Discussed possibility of some kind of royalty basis
but with a guaranteed yearly income for me. I would be
available for evaluation, doctoring, and for creating. They
would have first refused rights on my games.
We discussed CAR*TEL and he agreed that it was too
close to BRIDGE to be commercially feasable. He is trying
to divorce it completely. My scoring system for rubber
BRIDGE came up and he thinks it should definitely be
in the book.
He agrees also that more continuity has to be worked
into THE MONEY GAME. Jim is working on this. He is alos
working on CONFRONTATION.
Phil asked me if the name FORTUNE had been used. Told
him "no" and he wants to use the name for the game on
conglomerates.
When talking about card games I told him that
VENTURE had done much better than MONAD. He prefers the
latter, as being more of a game of skill. He told me
that TRYCE was a rummy type game using regular playing
cards which also have a letter on them. The play consists
