Tuesday 28 January 1969
28th day - 337 days to come
Called the Commerce dept. and asked them if the patents should
have taken so long in coming. They said I should check to see
what was wrong.
Thinking of a game WTHT VWLS. Two players each pick a word and
write it, leaving out the vowels, including a Y if it is used
as a vowel. Each then tries to fit a word to the consonants,
trying to get it before the other does. A solution doesn't
have to be the word originally thought of, as long as it fits
the consonants. The player getting the word scores the number
of letters in the word multiplied by the number of vowels in the
word. The other player then has 1 minute more to try to get
the word for the same type scoring. Each word not guessed scores
the length of the word for the one posing it.
Stan Harris & Phil Orbanes here for supper. Gave Stan a ver-
bal report on the 10 games (see 1/20).
VIVID LUCKY WORD GAME - Just another word RUMMY game.
(Have repro of rules - placed in "Misc. Game Folder.")
UPS AND DOWNS - X-word puzzle for kindergartener & 1st grade.
Board is as shown. There are large letter squares
which are placed on the picture whose first letter is
the same (as B on bird).
[drawing of several boxes in a crossword-style setup with various words written in the boxes or indicated as being in a box including: Bird, Lemon, Iron, Rabbit, Guitar, Owl, Dog, Egg, Nest...]
OBSERVATION LOTTO - Just another "Lotto" game.
LIMBO - Looks interesting at first glance but is really nothing.
Also can be played with regular cards. (Have repro of rules - placed
in "Misc. Game Folder.")
STAR-K-RAZY - A puzzle not a game. And it can be found in
books. (Have repro of rules-placed in "Misc. Game Folder.")
PAR - A fairly interesting domino variation, if it could be sold
for $1. The puzzle rules (the second game given) are not clear.
(Have repro of rules - placed in "Misc. Game Folder.")
EGG-HEADS - The best of the bunch. Something of the same flavor
as Cadaco's CONFETTI. I like it. (Copied onto 8x5 card.)
SNAFU - Moderately interesting but I have one of a similar
type I think is better. (See below). (Rules copied on 8x5 cards).
Told Stan I took 5 hours & he said to send a bill
for $50.
Showed them TAM-BIT and Stan & I played a game. He
liked it very much. Told him I thought I could come up with
a good 3 & 4 hand version.
Two more games I reported on:
PLAYING WITH MOTHER:- Four games in this set are develop-
ments of CANDYLAND, each with a separate board and
equipment. The fifth is an imitation of the German game
HOCH HINAUS in Childcraft catalog. [same contributor as PAR & EGG-HEADS.
WHAT CAR IS THIS? [Also the same contributor]. A quiz game based on
cars of various countries. There is a gadget with three
(cont. on 1/27)
