SUNDAY 20 OCTOBER 1968
Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity
294th day - 72 days to come
Finished writing up BLUE AND GRAY.
Read over the game of LE TRUC, Started writing an introduction.
Remembered someone had mentioned WAGON WHEEL CHESS but couldn't
remember the context. Think it was Jim Dunnigan. I'll call him
tomorrow and ask him.
(cont. from 10/21) [10/21]
by Jerry Smith (see When We Were Very Young in articles from periodicals).
There was a patented card game GAVITT'S STOCK EXCHANGE
(2 copies). I have the 1903 patent - #746, 492.
There was also a GAME using dominos with card symbols. I
am pretty sure I have a patent on this too.
At Rizonni (?), the Italian book store, I ordered a
copy of PICCOLA ENCICLOPEDIA DI GIUOCHI E PASSATEMPI PER GIOVANI ED ADULTI. They will phone in 3 to 4 weeks to
let me know if they can locate it.
At French book store inquired about the Marabout companion
to TOUS LES JEUX DE CARTES. Didn't have it. Bought a
copy of LE JEU DE TAROTS. I already had one but this one
is printed much better.
At Abercrombie & Fitch they had ACQUIRE & BAZAAR dis-
played prominently. They also had a game NOMINOES AND TRICKETS
by the Yeilding Co., Houston. The set consists of 56
3-sector pieces, all combinations of 0 thru 5 except that the
20 combinations of 3 different numbers are only included in
one direction.
The first game is similar to ALL-FIVE Players score
the total for having the ends add up to multiples of 5. The first piece
placed has the three sides counted (I think). After this
an end piece has two free sides, both of which are counted.
Only one can be played on except the first played triple
which can be played on all three sides. After the and side is played
on the third is not added in a score for scoring. If a
player plays a piece that joing up two free ends he scores
50 for this, plus the total of the third end if it totals
a multiple of 5. This one end is now the only remaining end
to play on. (Fairly complete idea.)
The second game is a bidding game. All the pieces with
o's are removed, leaving 35 pieces. 4 play, in partnerships.
Each gets 8 pieces, and 3 pieces are in a widow. Bid for the
right to name trump. Bids are in numbers of tricks
without mentioning suit. High bidder names the suit and takes the takes the widow and then names the trump suit. The
