MONDAY 26 AUGUST 1968
239th day - 127 days to come
Thought of a new idea for a pencil & paper word game.
I'll call it LAST WORD, although it is completely
different from the cross-word type game I worked
on some years ago. Played it with BB in the evening.
We both liked it.
We used a 9 x 9 field drawn on a piece of
paper. The 3 x 3 area in the center is filled with
letters chosen at random from a book. Then players
in turn place a letter of their choice in an empty space
next to filled spaces. They try to form words using
the placed letter and adjacent letters in any of the
four directions. (up & down, a horizontal, vertical,
or either diagonal). The letters do not have to be
in order to form a word. Only the longest word
formed in any direction counts.
To score a player must form words in at lea
least 2 directions since the score is determined
by multiplying the length of each word formed.
Player may may not place a letter that doesn't score.
Play until at least one box on each of the
4 edges is filled.)
Other possible variants. 1) A player may not play in
a space next (including diagonally) to the space
filled by the other player.
2) Each player is given a set of letters, about 35,
which are written on the sheet of paper and crossed off as
used. There is a penalty for not using one of the difficult
letters. In this version it probably would be better to allow form
forming, and scoring, a word in one direction, - scored at the value
times 1.
Made reproductions of SPELLBINDER rules. After work brought
the game to Alice.
