WEDNESDAY 7 AUGUST 1968
220th day - 146 days to come
Drove Jerry to airport. [He took me to dinner last night,
payed for my breakfast this morning and payed the
entire hotel bill.] [I was supposed to drive him to Springfield
to see Mel Taft today but ,with his broken hip,
he wasn't comfortable enough to ride that far in my car.
Called Hank Simmons and arranged to come in at 11. Stopped
at 2nd hand book stone on way. Nothing. He kept me waiting
until 11:30. Spent 1 1/2 hours with him. I went over
FITTING & PROPER, TOTALLY--, and ANOTHER He liked them all, seeming particularly taken by the game part of the first.
He emphazised, however that his enthusiasm doesn't mean
that they are accepted,
He said he thought that the day of game tous would
soon be over and people would be demanding something that
would make them think.
He asked me what games I had on the market and I told
him of ACQUIRE, BAZAAR, FOCUS, CASE OF THE ELUSIVE ASSASSIN,
and that there were others which I was not at liberty to divulge.
He was also interested in my book and kept a copy of the outline
Hank requested me not to thank Parker in my book
for the use of their Archives, since they don't want others
asking to use them. He gave me an 1968 catalog.
Spent afternoon at the ESSEX INSTITUTE. At the library
saw the following books : - BOOK OF GAMES by Kate Greenaway. (Children's games.) PINS AND PINCUSHIONS by E.D. Langman & Sophy Loch. (A number of games played with pins both the sticking type and those
that balls kknock down, as well as a lot of other material on
pins.)
ALDIBORONTIPHOSKYPHORNIOSTIKOS: A ROUND GAME FOR MERRY PARTIES!
(Not much of a game but an interesting name.) AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME OF PAM-LU. by B. J. Beicher
(see PAM-LOO in Culbertson's Hoyle. In "pam-lu" Par bam is the 2 [of clubs], not the J [of clubs] I'll have to look at the book
again ]
In library also saw a game called VILLAGE PORTRAITS a "Goose"
game with a 36 space track. No rules with it.
There was also a catalog from Noyes, Snow & Company of
Worcester, 1876. The following games are advertised : - CHRONICLES OF UNCLE SAM'S FAMILY FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS, THE GAME OF '76 OR THE LION AND THE EAGLE, GAME OF ROYALTY, ROYAL COMEDY, PARLOR CROQUET, AVILUDE OR GAME OF BIRDS, FERRILUDE OR GAME OF BEASTS, THE LOST NEIR, THE GAME OF SOCIETY, PORTRAIT AUTHORS, TOTEM, SNAP SPELLA, TRIO, LUCKY TRAVELLER, THE GREAT REPUBLIC, GAME OF LETTERS.
Spoke to a girl who worked in the museum, she had a list of
all the games and toys (they are cataloged together) in the
