136th day - 230 days to come
[Drawing of a 8x8 grid on the left of the page with sections further divided by thicker lines and dots drawn in random cells. A 5x4 red dotted line square outlines cells form multiple sections.]
Worked out the following arrangement of 9 pieces forming an
8x8 square for the game
FITTING AND PROPPER. There are,
of course, many ways in which
the 9 pcs. can be arranged, but
there are 5 basic positions for
the 4x4 pc:- 1) as shown next to
two edges; 2) next to one edge & 1
space away from the other; 3) next to
one edge & 2 spaces away from
the other; 4) 1 space away from
each edge; 5) 1 space away from 1 edge
and two spaces away from the other.
A position 2 spaces from each edge
(in the center) would not permit
placing of the 3x3 piece.
Two dice, each with the faces
1-2-3-4-[star]-[star], would be used to
identify the pcs. when played as a
competitive game to place pcs. so that they adjoin and touch each
edge or, for a longer game, each corner. A [star] would allow substitution
of any number and something special would be required for a throw of
1-1.
All of the smaller [crossout] pieces are set up so that they fit
on the 4x4 and the arrangement should allow for at least one false
position of the 4x4 (in red outline in illustration).
Made a rough set and had BB try it as a puzzle. It wasn't too
easy but it was obvious that the 4x4 had to be placed first.
Deposited the Ideal & Random House checks.
Rcd. a letter from Ji Morgan. Wants to get together during
stationery show. BAZAAR went national May 6th. He is sending me
6 copies.
