THURSDAY 11 JANUARY
Alexander Hamilton--Born 1757 1968 11th day - 355 days to come
Creative Playthings in its 1967 catalog has a game listed
called TOPPLE TOWER which is a direct steal from
BLOCKHEAD. It consists of 15 pcs. and they look almost
identical with Blockhead.
Also have the 4 cube puzzle CRAZY TEN.
[drawing of 4 cubes lined up, with top labels reading (left to right): 3, 1, 2, 4; bottom row labels reading (left to right): 1, 2, 4, 3, 1]
In Childcraft 1968 Catalog saw SQUARE
which I bought in Copenhagen - an English game.
Also HOCH HINAUS - "Stacking Discs." From the continent, an
amusing game of stacking that rewards judgment as well as man-
ipulative ability. Players add discs in turn to top of tower, with
out touching it; have to guess when tower will fall. Contains 22
highly polished wooden discs (5 dark are shown & the rest light);
bag of plastic scoring chips. 5-12 yrs. $2.95.
In Time magazine saw TURING'S GAME. Two players, hidden behind
screens, are being questioned by a third. All communication is by
typewritten note, the questioner is allowed to ask anything at all,
and the players are not required to tell the truth. Eventually, by
reason and intuition, the questioner must determine the sex of the
players.
Alice called. The contract came for TRIPLE CROSS.
Thinking of further ideas for DIRECTION. Instead of using
dice use cards from 1 to 8 which designate half lines as shown.
[drawing of asterisk with 4 lines, labeled clockwise from top: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Idea is to race from bottom to top of a
layout as shown on right. First idea
was to have players have a hand of
cards and play one at a time. This
allowed the player to get ahead to have a big
advantage. Wanted to allow variable numbers
of plays and thought of this. The 32 cards
from 1 to 8 are shuffled and layed out in 4
columns of 8 cards each. Tops of columns
are available for play. One player is red and
the other black. Players in turn play an
available card of their color. Must play one
but may play as many as available. Occasionly may have to
discard an unplayable card when there are no others playable. When
the layout is used up the cards are reshuffled and dealt out
in another layout.
[diagram drawn with 3 x 5 grid. Top row is labeled (left to right): 10, 10, 10.
Right of diagram is labeled (top to bottom): 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Bottom of diagram is labeled "START".
Left of diagram is labeled (top to bottom): 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.]
Original object was to be the first to reach the top. This
made the 3 and 7 useless. Then thought of giving points for
reaching a side, with values going up as the boxes ascend.
