TUESDAY 9 JANUARY
1968 9th day - 357 days to come
Called Bill Bentzin. Told him about the political games, including the
old games I saw at the Parker archives. He said that he may
be able to get me on some TV panels. He is going to St. Paul at
the end of the month. Will try to check on BAZAAR.
Thinking of using one of the games I saw at the Parker
archives as a pencil & paper board GAME which can be easily
made up by hand. Two possibilities. A large quadrille with
one space for each electoral vote. See in Parker archive notes,
pg. 8 (B) POLITICA for the type of layout.
This would probably be much too long a game.
This led to another idea. Have a 64 x 64
9 x 9 quadrille. Leave the outside spaces blank
and in the inner 7 x 7 place the states
(with Hawaii and Alaska on one space) with their electoral
votes. The largest states are at the center and getting
smaller as they get to the outside. Play is as in REVERSI.
The player with the most electoral votes wins.
This then led me to think of another GAME with a
similar type of play. The layout is drawn as shown.
[diagram of curved lines with intersecting dots and stars; lines are colored differently (yellow, purple, black, red, blue, green)]
Players in turn place a
marker on any spot. When
a player encloses one or more
of an opponent's pcs. along
a line these are turned to the
encloser's color. If one or
more of these turned pcs.
also enclose an opponent
these too are turned. Etc.
When all spaces are filled
players recieve one p player
with most receives 5
point + the difference in
ammount.
A player may not play a
pc. that causes one or
more of his pcs. to be
surrounded by the opponent
unless he makes a capture
in the same move, even if
the capture is on another
line. The pc. so played
is not captured even if at
the end of the move it is
still enclosed.
Called Harry Cunningham. Told him about Playthings subscription
for $2 (I had called earlier) and he told me to enter a
