Thursday 10 June 1965
161st day - 204 days to come
June 1965 Playthings came.
Doing some indexing of 1964 game diary and realized that I didn't have the latest rules for DATA recorded. They are as follows: -
Divide the data cards equally between the players (except for 2-handed game - see 1964) as in the original game. The playing cards are divided into two sets, the 42 "address" cards in one, and the "change specialty" - "score" and "reduce" cards in the other (52 total).
At the start each player is dealt 3 cards from each set. They throw each throw the specialty die to determine their first specialty. Each player in turn plays at least one card and at the end draw one card from each set. Players may continue playing as long as they wish (see later for exception) and have cards to play with.
In processing a player must obtain at least one of his specialty or he "fails." If he fails he cannot keep the cards, he loses one point for each card of his specialty he has, and he may not continue playing on that turn.
In "scoring" a player scores 1 point for each card of that continent. However if the continent is the player's specialty he receives 3, 4, or 5 points for each card (depending on the continent). The number of point required to win depends on the number of players (see 1964).
The "reduce" cards must be played at the beginning of a player's turn, but there is no compulsion to play it. Thus if a player has both "reduce" cards he knows there is not danger to his accumulating as many as he wishes.
The 52 card set
[column headings: Change. Score. Reduc to 6 cards]
3 of ea. continent. 5 of ea. continent. 2 Total.
2 to any speciality. 30 total. 2 Total.
20 Total.
