Saturday 9 January 1965
9th day - 356 days to come
Telephone call from Bob Abbott. He has an idea for getting
more contact into ULTIMA. There is a neutral pc. that
is started in the center (he is thinking of using a 9 x 9
board[)]. When this is "captured" it doe is not removed
but then belongs to the player capturing it. It can move
be moved by that player 1 space orthogonally. It has
not capturing power. It has to be moved to the opponent's
home row in order to win the game. It, of course, can
be captured by the opponent, and so on. A flat pc. black
on one side and white on the other could be used. [Tried later & not so good]
A correspondant of his suggested using a pc. that
could push others over the edge of the board. I
mentioned my TRACTION CHESS.
He also is thinking of a game with rolling cubes.
Each face has a different color. Cubes move orthgonally
and turn with each space. Pcs. capture by
replacement. However the starting po color of the moving
pc. determines the colors it may capture. This is listed,
say, on the board and a possible arrangement
might be as follows -

With Phil, Annette & BB played Q.E.D. (No one like the
name I thought of 12/30/64). Worked well but think it
would be better to use 4 piles of 5 cards each. After
one pile is exhausted subsequent cards advance one
box. As soon as a second pile is exhausted, the game
is ended.
Phil & I played L.O.A. He won.
Damon Carron (See 12/31/64) called. Will come here
next Wednesday.
