295th day - 71 days to come
On phone Phil told me of a GAME IDEA. 4 players play
using a quadrille board (size not set yet) each has
checkers of different color with (say) blue & green playing
against green & [crossed out] red & orange. Players take turns placing
a pc. on the board at will with the following exceptions: -
a player may not place a pc. nex [crossed out] diagonally next to one
of his own but may place one orthogonally. A partner may
not put a piece diag [crossed out] orthogonally next to one of his partners.
He may place one diagonally next to one of his partner's
but if he does the partner's pc. is removed.
Object is for the partners together to surround one of
an opponent's pcs. on the 4 corners. If the opponent has
two or more in a row it is only necessary to sur [crossed out] occu-
py the corner positions at the end.
[Drawing of a 3 x 3 grid with "R" in the middle, "G" on three corners, and "B" on one corner, sides being empty.] Red pc. is sur-
rounded.
[Drawing of a 3 x 5 grid with three "R"s in the middle spaces, "B"s on three corners, and "G" on one corner, sides being empty] Red chain is surrounded.
The game is over when one pc. or chain is surrounded.
Pcs. may be moved instead of placing a new pc.
A move is made to any unoccupied adjacent square.
A pc. cannot be moved if it has 2 or more enemy
pcs. in surrounding position. Later called this game STAR.
Rcd. THIS WEEK FUN & Games issues of H.T., Sunday Oct. 18.
Contains an article about game invention by Richard
L. Frey & a number of puzzles. Sent by Bob. Filed
in "Misc. Games" folder. No mention of me.
Alice sent me a later set of rules for HIGH-BID
which Bill Caruson sent to her. A little improvement
over the others but not much.
