28 MONDAY - AUGUST 1972
241ST DAY - 125 DAYS TO COME
BB took the rules for SIJJEH and models of my X-CHANGE-WORD, PAIR OFF, and SPELLBINDER. Also gave her a note that Felicia had my TANGLED WEB, WILD WOOD PILE, AND MAVERICK COUNTRY.
BB arrived at Felicia's when she was showing LOTTERY. Then BB showed PAIR-OFF, but felt that Felicia would rather she left, which she did.
Irving Woods of Western Publishing called. Apologized that he had not returned since I called him on 8/27 concerning their doing ONE AT A TIME BY THE MILLIONS for WOMAN'S DAY. He felt that 5,000 was a small number, but still wanted to talk about it. Gave him Marvin Channing's number so that he could talk to him directly. I said that I'd be in the area of Western Publishing's office tomorrow and if they wanted me to drop off the model one of them should let me know. Didn't get a call.
Rcd. the first two batches of rules for MIDGARD.
Rcd. rules for the following games from Phil Orbanes: RENDEZVOUS, ALONE TOGETHER, SPACE STATIONS, DOUBLE THINK, and THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA.
Felicia called. Her meeting today was with Dennis Merholz (and his wife) who is the head of development for "American Greetings."
Felicia told him that she saw their games at the Stationery Show and they're all knockoffs (or did he say they were knockoffs?). He said that 3M has only been doing knockoffs lately, and also that their sales are lousy. He'll send her copies of all their games about Oct. 1. She said she tried to stop him. I said that if she didn't want them I'd like them and she said she'd give them to me.
Felicia showed him AGOG and he said he'd buy a copy.
He knows about Hallmark. In fact they have an engineer working for them who had worked at Hallmark. He fancied himself as a game inventor but no one took any of his games. He, Merholz, said that Hallmark almost showed the games at this year's Stationary Show, but he is sure they'll be at next year's. Altho Hallmark is a competitor, he had only good things to say about them.
American Greetings' salesmen are doing so well that they are all not enthusiastic about the games (LINK-UP, NIX, etc.). Dennis asked Felicia about getting reps and she was against it.
Among things he didn't want were SPELLBINDER and X-CHANGE-WORD (no word games), PAIR-OFF and TANGLED WEB (they're too much alike), MARLBORO COUNTRY.
The following are things he was interested in. He just took the rules with him and promised quick "no's:"- LOTTERY (altho he thinks the theme is too regional), (cont. on 8/27)
