5 FRIDAY - MAY 1972
126TH DAY - 240 DAYS TO COME
To G.A.F. at 9:30 for meeting with Walter (Wally) Siegel,
Marketing Manager. He showed me gave me an ad sheet
for the game they are coming out with, KLOMP-IT GAME, and
described it to me. Not bad as a game.
Discussed various topics. Cartoon characters are their
most popular items. Sports are not yet of too much
interest for the age group they are aiming at. Animals and
elementary science also is popular. He gave me two
view-masters and a lot of slides as samples. However they
can come up with any new slides that I need. I said
that I certainly would come up with a travel game, plus others.
They will pay an advance and 5% royalties, if they accept
a game or games. The middle of July is about the time to
present the games to be in time for 1973 Toy Fair. Wally
didn't discuss it directly but I gathered that other people are
working on games.
Wally introduced me to Bill Eckert (spelling?) who has just come up
from the south to be Wally's assistant. Bill and I and John, the one
Bill is replacing took taxi to 200 5th. Looked at the G.A.F.
showroom and I got some more slides. Saw an ad sheet there
for JUMBLE GAME, which was a previous name for KLOMP-IT GAME.
On the other side is an ad for 'ROUND THE WORLD GAME. I asked
about it and John said it had been dropped as being too limited in
appeal, altho it was a good game.
He, John, asked me about sales of games per year and I gave him some
non-confidential info. They estimate about 125,000 a year for
KLOMP-IT GAME, with heavy promotion.
To Felicia. Told her a little about G.A.F. and told her she would get 10%
if it goes thru. (Very amiable.)
A scenic designer brought Felicia a game called URBAN RENEWAL by Neil Edwards which
she likes. She told him she'd show it to me. She was given
two sets of the rules and she'd show it to me (but may ask for it
back). The rules are fairly self explanitory [explanatory] except that
they don't give the interesting spread of parcel prices,
building costs (which may be given in terms of a total
parcel or per lot), and rentals. The central streets give a
player a chance to get property, The and at each intersection
he can draw a "City Life" card if he lands. The perimeter
parkway has spaces for demolition, zoning, building, and
collecting rent. (Fairly complete idea.)
Felicia doesn't have the definite info yet but is afraid that 3M
will be dropping the Gamette line. She said I should always push ACQUIRE
first, and then EXECUTIVE DECISION. If they do drop the
Gamettes she'll try to talk them into keeping HIGH BID in the Bookshelf
and also to put SLEUTH in, altho that will necessitate more components.
Someone who works for NBC has a game SIJJEH (which has something
to do, but is not necessarily completely, with Israel) being
considered by 3M and they said he'd have an answer in 90 days. He wants
her to take it over but she told him to wait for the answer.
