MONDAY 27 DECEMBER
St. John, Evangelical 1971 361st Day - 4 days to come
Felicia called in answer to my message to the answering service. Told her the gold news about Bob Gellman and JET HOLIDAY. Felicia said that I should get Ruth Shaler to help me with the revisions, but I said that it was just about all finished.
Rcd. a Card from Gini Scott. She just rcd. a contract for a PUZZLE that will be advertised on TV. She'll be in town at the end of Feb. and would like to get together.
Rcd. a letter from Jonathan Stimson who saw my column in BOOK WORLD. He wrote to Book World and they forwarded it. He invented a Stock Market GAME with a patented 8-sided weighted die and wants to know who to send it to.
Rcd. a letter from George W. Gingery, an AGOG reader. Mentioned ZETEMA, CROSSINGS, THREE MUSKETEERS, PIT, and two of his original games - CARD CROQUET and CARDS.
Called Phil Orbanes and he called me back. Spoke to Bob Hallowell first. He and his designer are crazy about HABITAT, although it is a real tough one (he never got it together again). Bob Reiss and Manny Lefkowitz much preferred FUN CITY, except one liked the name and the other hated it. Bob and I agreed that we should change it. I suggested SKYSCRAPERS, altho I mentioned that Parker had put out THE SKYSCRAPER GAME a long time ago. He thinks that Parker is very generous on things like this. They wouldn't officially give him permission to use the name ORBIT, but they told him they wouldn't sue him if he used it. We'll both try to think of another name. Bob has a sample of FUN CITY made up. It stands nice and straight, but he is not happy with the art work. He has to have another set ready by 1/10/72 for Reiss to show to Sears Roebuck for inclusion in the catalog.
Bob Hallowell discussed the idea of the pencil & paper games. We decided on 6x4 pad as a standard size. He said we can use two colors. He thinks the set should include from 5 to 10 GAMEs. We definitely can include dice in the set and will include a pencil. He said that the end of January would be O.K. to get together on it but I said I'll try for middle of January so that I'll have time to do further work if necessary. He wants to use THE DICTIONARY GAME, positively.
Spoke to Phil. He is thinking of leaving Reiss Associates and working for Jim Dunnigan. When he took the job they told him it would be a 9 to 5 job and on his own time he could create and license to anyone he wanted. Now that they have started Hoi Poloi they seem to want him to be available all the time for them. However if he does leave they will still be interested in his, and I-Q's creations.
I brought up that Hoi Poloi really represents a conflict of interest for the various companies Reiss is supposed to represent. Phil said there was resentment.
